As any prominent prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded that year
- Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
